Tiny House R

The villa had become too large for one person, but the location was worth keeping. Rather than move away, its owner chose to build a second home on the same plot in Kreuzlingen: a one-room house on the slope above the lake.

In a quiet residential area, Tiny House R keeps a low profile. Towards the street the building reads as a single storey and sits unobtrusively among its neighbours, while to the north it looks out over open water.

Its nickname, the Wohnbox, comes from the clarity of its form, and it describes the construction just as accurately. The lower storey is built from concrete and masonry and set into the slope. The upper storey was prefabricated as a timber box and placed on site in one piece.

A bridge and a forecourt terrace lead to the main living area. The entire upper storey is a single open room, oriented to the south and to the north towards the lake. Two opposing full-height frameless windows give the room its panorama and open onto both terraces. Sky-Frame Classic keeps the frame out of the view, so the transition between the room and the terraces remains uninterrupted. The private rooms, bedroom and bathroom, are located below the box.

Inside and out, the materials follow the construction. The upper storey has a ventilated timber facade and plywood linings, while the level below is rendered on the outside and built from sand-lime brick within.
