Orum Road, Bel Air, Los Angeles, CA

Perched atop a Bel Air hilltop, Orum is a 17,000-square-foot home designed to “float” above its environs—unnoticed.

Given its prominent positioning above a relatively developed neighborhood, the motivation behind the design of Orum was to create a residence that could meld into its surroundings. As such, the three-story structure, which takes on the shape of a three-winged propeller, is wrapped in four types of glass (reflective, translucent, opaque, and clear) that mirror its sweeping views of the Los Angeles Basin, which remain unobstructed from the Getty Center to Long Beach, Century City, and Downtown LA. The lines of the building itself are largely defined by the variation in the glazing.

Programmatically, the residence has been split into three levels, each made up of three wings. The ground floor provides communal spaces for gathering, while the top floor is dedicated to the home’s bedrooms. The basement level has been outfitted to house a theatre, gym, spa, and staff and guest rooms.

Despite the size and scale of the home, as well as the distinct separation of areas, an intimacy is maintained through the use of a central node. This junction is expressed as a glass-enclosed staircase stretching through the core of the home. And because each wing is transparent and joined by this glass confluence, all areas of the home are afforded 270-degree views.

Construction on Orum will be completed in July 2018.
