Ocean View

On the first visit to the site in Malibu it was clear that the ocean views are dramatic and have to be captured in the project. The property also had a slight slope that invited to be worked with. The beauty and simplicity of the property is reflected in the clean and sensitive design for the Villa.

The house consists of a simple volume that follows the existing topography and therefore allowed minimal disturbance of the beautiful site but also captures the stunning views over the ocean. The main orientation for the villa is south with a clear view of the ocean from all rooms. Entering the Villa from the east through an oversized glass pivot door, one is slowly prepared for the stunning views.

The location of the kitchen, dining room and covered patio is on the west side of the property and creates a feeling of total privacy. It’s the quietest area and allows to rewind from a successful day. From the kitchen area there is direct access to a roof deck with a 360 degree view of the surrounding areas such as Santa Monica, Palos Verdes and Catalina Island.

The living room with its open floor plan and the room height, frameless sliding doors system allows an all-around view from east to west with Santa Monica on the east, Catalina Island on the south and beautiful sunsets on the west. The living room is surrounded by a big deck with an integrated infinity edge pool and jacuzzi. With all sliding doors open, the deck is an integrated part of the living room and creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior.

All bedrooms are entered from the living room area to a wide hallway with focus on a big sculpture at the end. Each bedroom with its on bathroom is facing south and captures the Pacific view and has direct access to the pool and deck.

At the end of the hallway is the master suite with its oversized bathroom and closet. The views from the bedroom are to the east with Santa Monica in the far and the Pacific to the south. Direct access to the jacuzzi, pool and deck gives the owner the feeling of living in its own spa resort.

The basement of the Villa has its own movie theater, climate controlled wine room and fitness room with its own bathroom. The project with its sensitive design and the playfulness of the design, the modest color selection, the recessed decks and windows complement the beauty of the location. The 3 different heights for the levels in combination with the decks and the screen system create an interesting play of shapes, volumes, and lightness which fits perfectly on site.

All the colors were carefully selected and coordinated so that at the end it feels as one. We also made sure that non-toxic materials were used for the construction. For example the hardwood is natural wood that is only oiled, the carpet is 100% cotton and paint is all low-voc paint and more.

In summary the Villa is a combination of state of the art technology in combination with a simple and clean design. The created space is a great example for use of materials and colors and respect for the existing conditions of the site and neighborhood. With the use of the 5 basic principles of Feng Shui (Wood, Earth, Metal, Water, Fire) the interior of the house has a feel good vibe and emanates positive energy.
